Charleston port extends gate hours after ILA automation slowdown

THE South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) is extending gate hours at the Wando Welch Terminal and North Charleston Terminal last Saturday, as well as Monday and Tuesday.

"Truckers and other customers are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours to assist with the movement of cargo," said the port authority.
Last week automation appeared to spark an International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) slowdown that brought the terminal to a "stand still".

ILA union dockers targeted trucks, forcing drivers to stop for visual chassis inspections instead of allowing them through a new video inspection system, reported the Charleston's Post and Courier.

The SCPA in June 2016 went live with an automated gate system at the terminal that was designed to help speed trucks through the port. Normality was reportedly restored after a day, American Shipper reported.

Thus, the gates were opened for dry boxes from 6am to 3pm and open today Monday 6am to 8pm and on Tuesday from 6am to 8pm.

Reefer services will be provided during standard operating hours, said the SCPA statement.
